2cv Eight Ball Rally 2010 - Planning & Rules
In September 2010, a new band of hardened 2CVers, as well as some who will be defending their current titles, will once again embark on a grueling 3,000 to 4,000 mile trek around the UK, met along the way by day participants who will be joining just for a fun day out. Trophies will be fought over for both Full and Half Rallies. Who will be the Supreme Champion this year?

Stopping overnight to regain strength for the each day's challenges, it will take three days to reach Land's End, crossing many National Parks on the way. In the following days this intrepid band of travelers will eventually complete a giant figure of eight circuit of Great Britain, taking in all of this country's National Parks as they go. Starting in the Yorkshire Dales, the route will take this band of explorers to the Welsh coast via Snowdonia, then onward to Land's End, across to Kent, back up through East Anglia and the Peak District to the Yorkshire Dales again. On the second week the route will take in The Lake District, Ayrshire, Scotland's west coast and Skye, before crossing the Highlands towards John O'Groats and then back south via the Cairngorms, Northumbria and the North York Moors. The scenery will be spectacular. The driving will be tuff on occasion. One guarantee though, is that their will be a great sense of achievement when they eventually roll back in to the final finish point.

If you want to take home one of the "Eight Ball Rally Trophies" you will need to negotiate the possibility of dirt and mountain roads, tidal causeways and river fords, as well as potentially solve lots of riddles along the way. Can you and your "A" Series handle that kind of challenge? If the answer is "Yes" then why not sign up for the full two week 2cv Eight Ball Rally. If the answer is "No" then you might consider a lesser option like a week long Half Rally, or even a single or couple of days for the fun of it. If you just want to have a scenic drive around our beautiful country, then why not join us anyway and not worry about the competitive aspect. Something is there for everybody if you look for it.

There is one consolation however. For those who don't make it, unlike other massive challenging rallies, we'll always be within range of a friendly AA, RAC or Green Flag truck. How many teams will drive home? How many will take the "Tree Sadler Petrol Saving Scheme"? Only time will tell.

General Information:
The 2CV Eight Ball Rally is a figure of eight circuit of Great Britain for Citröen 2CVs or their derivatives. Some of the terrain can be challenging to these little air cooled 602cc cars, especially in the northern loop. Each single stage is designed to be a distance of approx 200 miles from start location to finish point, without calculating in the mileage of detours for completing the Eight Ball tasks.

Rather than a speed trial, this event takes the format of a "Scatter Rally". Participants are given a list of clues to certain tasks at the beginning of each new day. The resultant answer sheets and task verification photos are then presented to the rally referee at that evening's finish point. At the end of each stage a team's task points are then put towards that team's rally and/or half rally total.

At the completion of the "Full Rally" an "Eight Ball Supreme Champion" is declared. For those only able to compete in a "Half Rally", there's also a Half Rally Trophy. If a "Half Rally Champion" eventually wins the "Supreme Champion Trophy", the "Half Rally Trophy" passes to the next highest scorer for that half rally.

Requirements:
Must have:
  • The first and most important requirement is that you bring a 2CV or one of its derivatives. (A-Series)
  • Another requirement is to be a member of 2CVGB (This is a Club Sponsored Event)
  • To join 2CVGB if you're not already a member, please go to www.2cvgb.org.uk
  • Temporary membership (1mth) will be available for overseas participants when they register for the 2cv Eight Ball Rally.
  • A digital or phone camera (with screen viewing) - to show answer verification photos to the rally referee.

Desirables:

  • A good Road Map of Great Britain (SatNav is not forbidden but might not help with all the clues).
  • A pair of binoculars or good camera zoom. You may be asked to read high date stones etc on buildings to find the required task information.

Rules:
Basic rules (Sorry, but there has to be a few for legality & fairness to all):
  • All laws & "Rules of the Road" must be obeyed at all times (This is not a speed trial or race).
  • No exchanging task results with other teams. Teams must complete their own tasks and not work in groups.
  • You must present yourself at the evening check-in with your completed answer sheet by the set finish time.
  • Photographs for answer verification must clearly identify the answer or they could be rejected at the referee's discretion.
  • Late arrival at the check-in will result in penalty points being awarded (Reducing your stage/overall totals).
  • The rally referee's decision on times are final. No arguments about who's watch is more accurate.
  • The rally referee's decision is final on any dispute. Any dispute should be brought to his/her attention.
  • Any further rules will be displayed prior to the start of the rally, or may be varied at the referee's discretion with participant's input during the rally.

Insurance:
2CVGB membership provides insurance for the evening social get together aspect of the rally only. It remains the participants' responsibility to ensure they have adequate insurance for the driving portion. Accommodation is at the sole discretion of the participants and suggested facilities are just for information only, with no assurances or guarantees.

Tasks & Points:
Scoring System: The competition is judged on a points system. Points are awarded for completion of selected tasks. During each stage a maximum of 128 points are available. These points are then added to the competitor's rally/half rally total.

Calculating Points: Points are available on a pool ball system of scoring. There are two sets of clues available, "Quick" and "Cryptic", which will total up to the same number of points if all clues are successfully completed. The competitors will be given a choice of Quick or Cryptic clues at the start of each daily stage, and may chose a different set on successive days or stay with the same type. Each style of clues has it's own set of bonuses and disadvantages. These clues will act as stepping stones along a Red Route, but participants can take any route they chose on the day.

  • Quick Clue Bonus Answers: The 1-7 balls will score 1-7 respectively, with three questions at each location, and reflect the "spots". Max 84 pts.
  • Cryptic Clue Bonus Answers: The 9-15 balls will score 9-15 respectively, with one question at each location,  and reflect the "stripes". Max 84 pts.
  • The Eight Ball location (Wild Card) will be located off the beaten track (Red Route), and possibly reflects challenging driving or physical terrain, time sensitive challenges etc. Max availability of 64 points, based on 8 points per answer with 8 different questions at 8 different points within the Eight Ball task location.
  • The total number of points therefore available on each day will be 128.

Tactics, Risks & Penalties: At the beginning of each daily stage a team will need to decide whether to take the "Quick" or "Cryptic" clues. Both sets of clues will predominantly have different tasks to prevent two teams working together. All competitors will receive the same "Eight Ball" clue (written in quick clue format), which  is off the beaten track (Red Route) and constitute a significant point value. Each set of clues can result in the same total point value, but there are distinct advantages and disadvantages related to which set you chose to follow.

Quick Clues (Pros & Cons) Cryptic Clues (Pros & Cons)
Advantages:
  • Clue locations easily identifiable without need to work out cryptic.

Disadvantages:

  • Three times as many individual tasks within the same 7 locations.
  • Locations will be listed numerically and not geographically (requiring sorting out their geographical order on the map).
Advantages:
  • Only one task per clue location, therefore quicker turnaround at each location and less risk of mistakes being made.

Disadvantages:

  • Need to take time to work out location cryptically and risk of missing a location accordingly.
Penalty Points: If you arrive at the finish location after the first deadline, you will pot the cue ball (4 points away). An additional four points will be deducted for each additional ¼ hour (or part thereof) the team is late. After the final deadline, any team not reported in will score zero points for that stage. Negative points will not be awarded to carry forward. The least you can score for a single stage is 'zero points' after penalty deductions.

Location of Tasks: All tasks are usually located within a short distance of the Red Route as listed on the clue sheet received at the start of each daily stage. This Red Route is for information only to allow identification of the task locations. It may be expedient to stick to the Red Route on lots of occasions, but there is no requirement to do so. Any deviation from the Red Route however will invalidate the approximate mileage indicated on the clue cards in order to assist participants in their daily planning.

Task Free Days: Full Rally and Half Rally participants can elect one day in each Half Rally where they will score the maximum 128 points for that day while not being required to participate on that day. This "Day Off" can be taken for any stage, with the exception of the first and last days of each Half Rally (i.e. Any stage starting or finishing in Malham cannot be declared a Task Free Day). The Task Free Day commences after the previous day's answer sheet is verified and the participants are not required to be available until the start of the next competitive day at that day's start location (i.e. You get a full day and two nights to relax, become tourists, visit friends or family, etc before starting again 200+ miles up the road.

Tie Breaking: In the event of a tie on points for the rally/half rally trophies, the next deciding factor is the competitor with the least penalty points. If still a tie, then the most 8 ball points. The progression then goes most 15 ball, 14 ball, 13 ball, 12 ball, etc. In the unlikely event of there still being a tie, a tie break task at the final finish location is undertaken by the tied teams.

Daily Order of Play:
Each registered team will be allocated a registration token after full completion of registration and payment of registration fees.
  • Clue cards for the daily stages will be available from 8am until 9am each day at the Start Location indicated for that day. Day competitors will need to arrive between those times and make themselves known to the rally referee. At 9am the rally referee will leave the start location themselves and any participant who hasn't collected their clues may risk "zero" points for that day.
  • Your registration token will need to be handed in to the rally referee in return for a set of daily clues. You must choose whether to take cryptic or quick clues at the start of each seperate day. Once a set of clues has been accepted they cannot be changed until the following day, but each day you get to choose again.
  • Teams can leave on their daily quests any time after receiving their clue cards. There will however be a 30sec rule to prevent clumping of cars and to ensure fairness to all.
  • The first deadline for handing in your answers at the finish location will be 8pm. Anyone arriving after this time incurs penalty points. The final deadline for arrival at the finish location will be 10:30pm. Anyone arriving after 10:30pm will score 'zero' points for that stage.
  • Your stage total will be given to you after the rally referee has scored your answer sheet and reviewed your answer verification photos.

Corporate Sponsorship:
2CVGB and the Eight Ball Rally organisers have no problem with participants getting corporate sponsorship. If you can find a company who will cover your expenses in return for advertising on your vehicle, go for it.

Charity Sponsorship:
Charity sponsorship is an important part of any car rally. After a review by 2CVGB of the rules pertaining to having a specified club charity, the decision was made to allow all events to chose their own charity to raise money for.

The organisers of the 2cv Eight Ball Rally feel this massive commitment should result in monies being raised for whatever charity the participant wishes it to go to for themselves. It is for this reason each participant will receive a certificate denoting what stages and how many points that team has achieved during their level of participation. They can then use this certificate as evidence of completion to collect charity monies for their own chosen charity that they've all worked so hard towards.
